May 11, 2017 Thursday 8:30am-12pm I arrived on the campus of Salisbury University at 8:30 am where I met assistant coach Knute Kraus. He took me around the campus showing me each build and explained things that he might show a recruit on a campus tour. The campus is very large and has a lot to offer. After the tour we went back to the men’s lacrosse offices where I met with the head coach Jim Berkman. We talked a bit about what I would being done over the course of this internship. After that I made NCAA event passes for their NCAA-Tournament Second Round game that week. I had to cut out a laminate about fifty of these passes. Then I went with coach Kraus and Assistant coach/ recruiting coordinator Justin Axel where they showed me the technology they use to communicate with recruits and document their information. They then had me send out text messages to the recruits by each recruiting class to see how their high school lacrosse season was going and keep them posted with our NCAA-Tournament game coming up. I had to data entry log each text with the recruits information to show the date that I had texted them so we could remember when we last contacted them.
May 12, 2017 Friday 8:30am-12pm So I started the day out by meeting Coach Berkman in his office where he would explain what he had for me to do. First, I was to finish sending out text messages to the recruits and data entry each one of those texts I had sent. That took a good bit of time, since the list for each year was pretty big. Next, I was to reply to the texts we received back from the recruits. It was important to answer back to show that we were still interested and make sure they were still interested in Salisbury as well. The last thing Coach Berkman had me do for the day was to fill out nomination forms for All-Americans for a few players. There were four players he was nominating; I was to look up their person and lacrosse information to fill out these forms. Coach Also had some Awards a couple players had earned for academic honors over the semester during season that needed to be mailed out.
May 13, 2017 Saturday 11:45am- 3:15pm Today was game day Salisbury was playing Hampden-Sydney in the NCAA tournament third round game. This was the one of the first games on their road to chasing another Division III National Champion. I arrived at Seagull Stadium around 11:30am where I met Jessica Stoltz, she is game day operations manager for the stadium. I worked alongside her with security at the front gate and stands. At the front gate we check tickets and fans bags for prohibited items. Then we would walk around the stands just checking that everything was in order. During the second half of the game I was able to stand along the sideline and observe Coach Berkman and his coaching staff. I felt that by just observing the way he acted on the sideline and how he spoke to his players taught me quite a bit. Salisbury went on to beat Hampden-Sydney 25 to 12.
May 16, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am-12pm Today I started out the day by sending out text messages to the list of recruits telling them about our will over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. Then I had to data entry each text into their player information. After that I started to reply to the recruits as they answering the text messages. Then after that I started on a project that will go on over the course of this internship. Coach Berkman has me creating a list of all boys club lacrosse coaches and theirs info for the club team. I found this information through packets of player profiles that played at tournaments. The purpose of this list is to make it easy to reach out to the club coaches in order to get messages out to their team or recruits.
May 17, 2017 Wednesday 5:45pm-9pm It was game day again this time Salisbury would be playing Denison in the NCAA tournament semifinal game. So I arrived at Seagull Stadium at 5:45pm where I assisted Jessica Stoltz the game day operations manager again. I worked with security at the front gate and stands. At the front gate we check tickets and fans bags for prohibited items. Then we would walk around the stands just checking that everything was in order. During the second half of the game I was able to stand along the sideline and observe Coach Berkman and his coaching staff. While I was observing one thing that I really like that the coaching staff did was at half time all the coach offensive and defensive coaches gathered together before heading into the locker room and they discussed what they were going to cover with the team during their half time talk. I thought this was more efficient and kept them on track of the points that needed to express to the players. Salisbury went on to defeat Denison 12 to 11 in a nail biter game.
May 23, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am-12pm I started out the work day by sending out text messages to recruits about the win over and how the team is headed to Boston to play in the national championship game. As the recruits answer back most of them replying back with “congrats and good lucks”, I was to respond back to them. Lots mentioned that they would be in attendance for the championship game. Salisbury would play Rochester Institute of Technology on May 28th at Gillette Stadium in Boston. After sending out the texts I was to data entry into their information. I sat down with Coach Berkman and we went over film on the opponent. We look for their strengths and weakness on several games throughout the opponent’s season. I thought this was awesome to see the different ways they could break down the films and learn more about the opponent. One thing we discussed was that their coaching staff when preparing for a game will take about two days to focus on the opponent and then the other time to focus on themselves. Then once that was completed I continued to work on the club coach’s information list by searching through player profiles to find the coach’s information.
May 24, 2017 Wednesday 8:30am-12pm As we continued to prepare for the fast approaching championship game the first thing on my list to do was to create a travel itinerary for their trip to Boston. In this itinerary it includes times of departures, practices/game, and breakfast/lunch/dinners. This also includes a pre packing list for the players. After I was finished creating the itinerary I was to send it out to all the players going on the trip. Then Coach Berkman and I went to the grocery store to buy some waters, Gatorade’s, fruits, and granola bars for the players on the bus ride to Boston. We talk about the money situation for the players and coaching staff over this trip. At Salisbury they give cash to each player for the day so they can decide where they want to eat. Each play gets six dollars for breakfast, seven for lunch, and thirteen for dinner, which makes a total of twenty-six dollars per day. Then to cap off the end of that day I worked on the club coach’s information list by searching through player profiles to find the coach’s information.
May 25, 2017 Thursday 8:30am-12pm Today was a slow day in the office the coaches and team had left early this morning headed for Boston. I would be heading up to Boston on Friday to watch the team hopefully catch another National Championship. I was assigned to work on my projects I had been in working on. I started with the club coaches list that I was searching through player profiles looking for new coaches for clubs team to add to the master list. After that I started on a new project for the team’s locker room. In their locker room they have All-American boards with all the years and players names when they were selected as All- Americans. When they first had these made a few years before several people's names were misspelled and I needed to add this year’s All- Americans to the list. I was to go through a list they already had of the all the All-American in school history to make sure the spelling and names were correct.
May 30, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am-12pm So on May 28th I was able to watch the team captured its 12th National Championship in Salisbury University Men’s Lacrosse history at Gillette Stadium in Boston, Massachusetts. Being able to watch that experience was unreal. The excitement in the players and coaching staff is something to look forward to and work toward being the best. As my first assignment after getting back was to reach out to all the recruits for each class and let them know the team had won the National Championship and it was the 12th in program history. Before sending those out many had already texted in to congratulate the coaching staff on winning the championship. Therefore I was to reply to them, thanking and if they made the trip out to Boston thanking them for the support. Then I started sending out the texts to the recruits and as I texted them I had to be sure to data log in their information I had contacted them again. As they replied back I would answer them right back as well. After I was finished sending out the texts I had to mail out some certificates some of the players received during the season, some of them were All-American awards. I had search for their address in their player profile and mailed out the certificate to them. After I had completed those I was able to speak with Coach Berkman about the Championship.
May 31, 2017 Wednesday 8:30am-12pm Today I was to continue working on the All-American project for the locker room. The All-American boards with all the years and players names when they were selected as All- Americans. When they first had these made a few years before several people's names were misspelled and I needed to add this year’s All- Americans to the list. I was to go through a list they already had of the all the All-American in school history to make sure the spelling and names were correct. I need to get the measurements for the paper so the people at the publications department at the school would know what size when I gave them the list of names. I came up with the idea to add at the end of the list of All-Americans a list of players of the years. So we added National Player of the Year and then positions of the year like Attacker of the Year and Defender of the Year. Coach Berkman thought this was a great idea so I went ahead and added it into the plan of the project.
June 2, 2017 Friday 8:30am-12pm To start out the day I had to finish up the All-American boards so we could get them over to the publications department so they could get them printed and I would then hang them back up. We were trying to get these done before the upcoming prospect days later in the summer. The last thing I had to add on these lists were the National Player of the Year and then positions of the year like Attacker of the Year and Defender of the Year. After that was completed I sent out emails to recruits that coach Berkman and Coach Axel had gone to watch the day before. When sending out emails to recruits they broke it down to three messages: the first was the top letter message which was your basic email showing interest and giving some information about the school this type of player was not bad but was not the best out there but the coaches were still interested. The second message was a prospect day invite and sometimes a visit invite. These were the good kids that the coaches would like to see play again and were a little bit more interested while recruiting. Finally, the third type of message was the direct text to the player or personal email coming directly from one of the coaches. This message is one I would not send out but the other two I was responsible for sending out to all the kids they like at the tournaments. Those two messages were already formatted out all I had to do was copy and sent to their emails. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Under Armor Baltimore Tryouts. The coaches while at the tryouts made notes on the players in their team information packets and they highlighted the ones that need which email.
June 6, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am-12pm Today I got on campus at 8:30am and headed to coach Berkman’s office in Maggs Gym we were talking and told me that throughout the course of this internship that I would spend most days sending out lots of emails to recruits from tournaments the coaching staff will be attending. When sending out emails to recruits I was sending them either the top letter message which was your basic email showing interest and giving some information about the school. Or the prospect day invite and sometimes even the visit invite. These were the good kids that the coaches would like to see play again and were a little bit more interested while recruiting. Those two messages were already formatted out all I had to do was copy and sent to their emails. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Freestate Tryouts that Coach Axel had been at this past weekend. While he was at the tryouts he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type. After sending out the emails Coach Berkman had written up player improvement sheets for each player that needed to be filed into their player profile. I thought these player improvement sheet could be very useful in what a player had done good in the past season and maybe what they need to work on. These also could keep Coach Berkman on track to making his players the best they can be.
June 7, 2017 Wednesday 8:30am - 12pm Today when I arrived on campus would be working with Coach Axel to start out. I would be sending out emails for him. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Philly NXT Tournament that Coach Axel had been at. While he was at this tournament he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type. After I finished Coach Berkman also had some emails that needed to be sent out from a tournament he had been to in Baltimore. Then once all those emails had been sent out I was to work on the club coach’s information list. I continued to search through players information to find these coaches contact information.
June 9, 2017 Friday 8:30am -12pm Today we on campus there was going to be a recruit meeting with the coaching staff to talk and then would be taking a tour around campus. I had the opportunity sit in on how they deal with a recruits visit. First, the recruit would meet with Coach Berkman to sit down and talk over academics and athletics. But before getting into that they would just discuss personal information. Then Coach Berkman talked about the school and why it is the school for them and what it has to offer. Followed by lacrosse and the program he has built up for almost 30 years now. Then Coach Axel would come to take them around campus and through the stadium. I feel I learn some things that team do that helps them be successful academically and athletically. One thing I learned was that throughout the first semester all freshmen have to set up a time and met with Coach Berkman every Monday to go over their grade and work they had done the week before. If by the second semester their grades were they did not have to continue to meet every week they would just check in occasionally. Athletically they would stay over winter break and take a class or two but they would all work out and prepare for the upcoming spring season. There were lots of useful things I picked up from sitting in on this recruiting visit that I can see myself using possibly in the future.
June 12, 2017 Monday 8:30am -12pm Today when I arrived on campus I headed to the office to help Coach Kraus. He needed me to help him send emails to recruits. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Big 4HHH tournament in New Jersey that Coach Kraus had been at this past weekend. While he was at the Big 4HHH he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type.
June 13, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am - 12pm Today was just another familiar day in the office. Coach Axel had just returned from a long weekend he had spent out on the road recruiting so he would have lots of emails to be sent out. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Adrenaline Platinum Performance Tournament that Coach Axel had been at this past weekend. While he was at the Adrenaline Platinum Performance Tournament he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type. Coach Axel also had the opportunity to talk about recruiting and how to keep in contact with the recruits.
June 19, 2017 Monday 8:30am -12pm After arriving to campus I headed to Coach Berkman’s office where he had a couple assignments for me. The first thing he had for me to do was to send out prospect day invites to all the players that had made all the Under Armor teams there were eight teams. Today I would be sending invites to the Baltimore and DC teams. I would send the rest of the invites to the other teams once I received their contact information. After I completed that I helped send out emails for Coach Berkman. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the IMLCA National Cup and IMLCA Select Showcase that Coach Berkman had been at this past weekend. While he was at the IMLCA National Cup and IMLCA Select Showcase he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type.
June 20, 2017 Tuesday 10:30am - 2pm Our prospect day was quickly approaching in the next few weeks and we needed to reach out as many recruits we could. The prospect day is where players would come to the college and the would practice for an hour and half and then scrimmage one another for the other two hours. The prospect day game the recruits interested in Salisbury another chance to show the coaching staff their best and gave the coaches another opportunity to watch the recruits play. Today I would be sending out prospect day invites to the Philly, Long Island, and New Jersey Under Armor teams. These recruits had to try out for these teams and had some of the best recruits from all over the country. We would be holding a few different dates for prospect days throughout the summer and even into the fall. Having multiple prospect dates makes it easier for the recruits to pick the date that works best for them and the summer lacrosse schedule. This also made it easier on the coaches to break down all the recruits and focus on individuals more in depth.
June 21, 2017 Wednesday 8:30am - 12:30pm Today I would be sending out prospect day invites to the North, South, and West Under Armor teams. These recruits had to try out for these teams and had some of the best recruits from all over the country. The prospect day is where players would come to the college and they would practice for an hour and half and then scrimmage one another for the other two hours. The prospect day game the recruits interested in Salisbury another chance to show the coaching staff their best and gave the coaches another opportunity to watch the recruits play. These were the last of the Under Armor teams that needed invites to the upcoming prospect days. The prospect days were super important to the coaches because these kids that come are super good and the coaches really want them to come to Salisbury to play for the program.
June 26, 2017 Monday 10:30am - 12pm This week would be a super busy week with preparing for the first prospect day this Friday and the coaches being at lots of tournaments recruiting over the weekend which means lots of emails to be sent out. Once getting to the campus I was instructed to go to the publications office to pick up the All-American project boards, new national championship teams poster, and new national players of the year poster that were being updated for the locker room. After picking up the boards and posters Coach Kraus and I headed over to the locker room to put up the new All-American boards. We took apart all the boards and cut holes in the new ones to place them up on the wall of the locker room when you first walked in. Once getting those hung up they looked awesome. After that we had to put the national championship teams and national players of the year posters in the frames of the old ones. But when we went to replace them the new ones ended up being too, so we had to take them back over to the publications office where they would have to reprint them to the right size for that frames. After doing that Coach Kraus had some emails he needed me to send out for him from a tournament he had been at. I would be sending out emails and prospect day invites to kids that were at the Inside Lacrosse Invitational. Coach Kraus had made notes while at the tournament about the kids he wanted to reach out to so I could get in touch with them. June 27, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am - 2pm Today when arriving on campus I would be helping Coach Axel with sending out tons of email from a huge tournament he had just returned from the day before. Coach Axel had been at the Maverick Showtime tournament that was one of the largest lacrosse tournaments of the summer. He was really focused on the recruiting class of 2020 and wanted me to send an email out to every kid that played in the Maverick Showtime tournament in the 2020 class. This had to be at least 350 kids that I needed to send an individual email out too. While he was at the tryouts he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type. After sending out most of the emails to the kids I had to go the locker room to start setting up for the prospect day that Friday. We had to make sure the locker room was clean and had to hang up the jerseys for the recruits in each locker.
June 28, 2017 Wednesday 8:30am-12pm Today I started out the day by meeting up with Coach Berkman in his office to see what he had for me to do today. The first thing he had for me to do was to send out thank you cards out to people that had made donations to the men’s lacrosse program this year. Coach Berkman had written each person a personal thank you letter thanking them for their kind donation for the program. I was to search the person's name and find their address. Then I needed to write the addresses on envelopes to mail them. After that Coach Berkman had received a few awards from the end of the season that needed to be mailed out to the players. So I just needed to find their addresses in their player profiles. Then I mailed those awards and the thank you cards out. When I finished that I went to help Coach Axel by sending out the rest of the emails to the 2020 class recruits from the Maverick Showtime tournament. At this time, I still had about a hundred email that needed to be sent out.
June 29, 2017 Thursday 8:30am-12pm Today Coach Berkman had called me on my way into campus to tell be to go back to publications to pick up the posters of the National Championship team and National Player of the Year. The first time they had printed the posters one was all bent up and they were both too big for the frames of the old posters. So after they had printed new ones I went to pick them up and then headed for the locker room to get them hung up before tomorrow’s prospect day. Who knew it be so hard to put a poster into this most complicated frame, but I got it done and they looked really good. After that Coach Kraus had me sent out some emails for him from the Crabfeast tournament he had been at earlier this week on the western shore of Maryland. While he was at the tryouts he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type.
June 30, 2017 Friday 10:15am-3:15pm Finally, today was the day our first prospect day of the summer. In these prospect days the coaches were focused on the 2018, 2019, and some 2020 recruits. So to start out the day I arrived at the Seagull Stadium at 10:15am where I headed to the locker room to meet up with all the coaches. From there Coach Axel and I started setting up for registration. Each player had already registered and payed for the camp so all we had to do was check them off as the showed up and tell them their assigned jersey number. After the camp got started I hung out on the field to take some picture for their social media accounts. As the camp was going I basically was managing the stadium. If the parents had any questions I would answer them for them and would help direct them if they needed help. I also just walked around the stadium to make sure everything was going good. When they were done playing and Coach Berkman talked to all the player and parents we all said goodbyes and thanks for coming. Then after the camp was over I helped clean up the locker room and break everything down in the stadium. The coaches then headed to lunch to discuss how each player did and if they were going to continue recruiting them or not. If the coaches thought the player did well the player would then receive an email within 24 hours.
July 6, 2017 Thursday 8:30am-12pm After a very long weekend due to the 4th of July and some of the coaches being out of the office for the holiday I finally headed back to campus at the end of that week to get some work done. Coach Kraus had just returned from a long beginning of the week out recruiting at tournaments all over. He had lots of emails for me to send out to players. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Nike Blue Chip Tournament that Coach Kraus had been at. While he was at the Nike Blue Chip Tournament he made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type. After sending out all the emails to the player’s Coach Berkman had me send out text messages to all the recruiting classes just to reach out and see how their summer was going. He wanted to make sure we were keeping in contact with all the recruits to show we were still interested in them coming to Salisbury. When sending out the texts I had to make sure that data entry into their player information that we had contacted them. This was to be sure that we were not over contacting them or not contacting them enough.
July 10, 2017 Monday 8:30am-12pm The coaches were out all weekend again busy recruiting so they had lots of emails for me to send out again today. Coach Axel had gone to the NHSLS tournament and Naptown Challenge while Coach Kraus was at the IMLCA Showcase. While they were at the NHSLS, Naptown Challenge, and IMLCA Showcase they made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type. While they were away lots of times recruiting they did not have a lot of other work for me to do. They would all be leaving tomorrow to travel again for tournaments in the Philly and Maryland area. We talked about how important it was for them to try to travel to all of these tournaments throughout the summer so they could be sure to try to see all the team from around the US play.
July 17, 2017 Monday 8:30am-2pm After returning back on campus from the weekend I would be working with Coach Axel some today. He had traveled to Philly this weekend for two tournament and had plenty of emails to send out to recruits we watched there. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Philly Summer Invitational and Philly Summer Showcase. Coach Axel made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type while he was at the Philly Summer Invitational and Philly Summer Showcase. Then Coach Berkman had an assignment for me to do. Lacrosse Magazine had reached out to him looking for data on his players and if they were multi-sport athletes in high school. So he had all his current players’ text me their name and what sports they played in high school. I then created an excel file with all the data and showing how many and what sports they had played. After getting all that I sent the information on to Coach Berkman so he could forward it to the person writing the article about multi-sport athletes in high school for Lacrosse Magazine.
July 20, 2017 Thursday 8:30am-12pm Coach Kraus after being away for a few days out traveling to a few tournaments recruiting returned back to campus so he had some work for me to. He had been at the FLG in 3D tournament and the Trilogy Academic Aces tournament. Coach Kraus made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type while he was at the FLG in 3D and Trilogy Academic Aces tournaments. After sending all those emails out to the players for him I went to Coach Berkman’s office to help him. We needed to clean and dispose of old player profile information and old junk that Coach Berkman did not need anymore. We also organized and replaced the newer information so that it was in a neat and orderly fashion. Coach Berkman had me place the new player’s profile information into a new binder. Each class had their own binder with all the player’s profile information.
July 24, 2017 Monday 8:30am-12:30pm Today I arrived on Salisbury’s campus where I headed to Coach Berkman’s office to help assist him for the day. So we got talking about when school starts up what all needs to be done before the students arrive on campus. He told me to go ahead and make some posters about their first team meeting. He gave me some basic information that he wanted me to put on the posters like where, when, what to bring, and some contact information. He told me to get creative and design some posters for it. I came up with two different posters for the meeting. After spending some time on each poster I sent them to Coach Berkman to get his approval. Then once he looked over them he gave me the go ahead to put them up around campus so they would be there for people to see once students started to arrive on campus. When we finished hanging those up Coach Berkman wanted to clean out his office. He had tons of books, old awards, and other stuff he wanted to get rid of in his office. I helped him clean and organize his office.
July 27, 2017 Thursday 8:30am-12pm Today was the day before our next prospect day and our last one for the summer. The next two prospect day would not be until the fall time. So in preparation for tomorrow’s prospect day I headed over to Seagull Stadium. Once I got to the locker room I made sure it was all clean and had to hang up all the jerseys for the players in each locker. After finishing that I went back to the offices to help Coach Axel send out emails from the tournament he was at the day before. Today I would be sending out emails for Coach Axel to the kids that were at the Diamond Showcase. He made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails and which type while he was at the Diamond Showcase. This was all I had for the day once I finished getting those emails out to the players.
July 29, 2017 Saturday 10am-3pm Today was our second prospect day. This would be our last prospect day of the summer, but there would be two more in the fall. In the prospect days the coaches were focused on the 2018, 2019, and some 2020 recruits. When they were done playing and Coach Berkman talked to all the players and parents we all said goodbyes and thanks for coming. Then after the camp was over I helped clean up the locker room and break everything down in the stadium. The coaches then headed to lunch to discuss how each player did and if they were going to continue recruiting them or not. If the coaches thought the player did well the player would then receive an email within 24 hours.
July 31, 2017 Monday 8:30am-12pm Our second prospect day ended up being a success. It was fun experience to get to be a part of the prospect days. I feel like I learned quite a bit from helping and watching the coaches run these prospect days. For today, Coach Berkman wanted me to go into front rush and input the incoming freshman for this year. Front rush is a recruiting site that allows you to input player information. Front rush also allows the coaches to send out texts or emails to the whole roster if they need to. Coach Berkman gave me the binder for the class of 2017 this is where I could find their information. Once I got all the information into front rush, Coach Kraus had just gotten to the office after being on the road recruiting for the weekend. He had be at a few tournaments, therefore he had some emails that needed to be sent out. Today I would be sending out emails to the kids that were at the Elite 100 tournament and the Fab Frosh/Super Soph tournament. He made notes on the players in their team information packets and highlighted the ones that needed emails. This was all I had for the day once I finished getting those emails out to the players.
August 2, 2017 Wednesday 8:30am-12:30pm I got to campus and met with Coach Berkman. He then explained how in the next few weeks we would be having several recruits touring campus. For each recruit we had on campus they would receive a recruiting packet which just included some booklets about the lacrosse program past and the current season’s magazine. I was assigned to make more recruiting packets. When making these I was to just put a couple booklets, the present team’s magazine, and few other informational sheets inside an envelope. I had to make around sixty recruiting packets. When finished with that Coach Axel and I were brainstorming some ideas he had. He was interested in doing a shooting academy that would be open to the public. He had this software on his iPad that was able to break down an attackers shot down for them to see what they need to change. He wanted me to create a flyer that he would be able to send out to all the club lacrosse coaches around to see if anyone was interested. I got started on the design for the flyer and got a little starter information to get the flyer going. After working on that for a bit Coach Axel had a few emails that needed to go from the Maryland Lacrosse tournament he had gone to.
August 3, 2017 Thursday 8:30am-12pm On the agenda today I first started with sending text messages out to all the recruiting class. Coach Berkman wanted to make sure we were keeping in contact with all the recruits to show we were still interested in them coming to Salisbury. When sending out the texts I had to make sure that data entry into their player information that we had contacted them. This was to be sure that we were not over contacting them or not contacting them enough. My next task to complete was to set up the “big brother program”. Salisbury lacrosse does the “big brother program” where an upperclassman would take a freshman under his wing to mentor him. Coach Berkman had assigned an upperclassmen to a freshman then I had to text both the upperclassmen and freshman each other’s information so they could reach out to one another. Coach Berkman wanted them to get to know one another before school even started. I then was instructed to remove a list of players from front rush that we would no longer need to contact. This helped get me familiar with front rush and how it all works.
August 8, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am-12:30pm My first task today was that the all mothers of the team got pendants. For each mother that got a pendant we needed to get their address and make an excel file with all their information. The pendants were going to be mail to mothers. I was to find their address and put them on an excel file. Since school was fast approaching Coach Axel wanted me to create a player profile file in google where we could send them to all the new player to be sure we had all their information. This made it easier on both the coaches and players that everything would already be on the computers. Once I had completed making the player profile forms Coach Axel had a few prospect day invites he wanted me to send out for the next prospect days in October and December. The prospect day invite and sometimes even the visit invite. These were the good kids that the coaches would like to see play again and were a little bit more interested while recruiting. These kids were super important to the coaches and their recruiting. They really wanted these recruits to come to Salisbury to be a part of their program.
August 9, 2017 Wednesday 8:30am-12:30pm When arriving on campus today I headed to Coach Axel’s office since Coach Berkman was away on vacation at this time. Then Coach Axel had their fall ball schedule written out and had me go into their lacrosse account on google to put the fall ball schedule into the calendar. By doing this it help get me familiar with using google calendar and how their schedule in the fall is designed compare to mine here at Tiffin. Once I completed that I then started creating a mailing list for the shooting academy that Coach Axel and I had been working on. The shooting academy would be open to the public to help players develop and perfect their shooting skills. He had this software on his iPad that was able to break down an attackers shot down for them to see what they need to change. To create this list I searched through several tournament player contact information packets looking for the emails of every midfielder and attacker. We wanted to send them the flyer I was still making inviting them to the shooting academy Coach Axel would be running. After searching through lots of emails I was to send out the workout packets to the incoming freshman. This was so they could start preparing for fall ball season.
August 14, 2017 Monday 8:30am-12pm Today would be an easy day as Coach Berkman was just returning from vacation. I was to continue to work on the shooting academy project. Coach Axel and I had been working on the shooting academy would be open to the public to help players develop and perfect their shooting skills. We saw this as an excellent opportunity, because there was nothing else like it anywhere there. Coach Axel had this software on his iPad that was able to break down an attackers shot down for them to see what they need to change. I continue working and trying out some designs for the flyers. I had come up with some different ideas, but wanted to get the final say from Coach Axel since he would be running this whole thing. I had to also look through some other tournament player contact packets to find some more emails. When looking for emails we tried to only send it to kids that lived in the surrounding states. This was no kid from California or Florida was going fly here just for a camp and we did not need to waste time either. Things were starting to come together for Coach Axel’s idea and I was honored to be able to help him actually make it work.
August 15, 2017 Tuesday 8:30am-12pm I started the day off right where I had ended yesterday. I finished up the rest of the designs for the shooting academy flyer for Coach Axel. I think it had turned out very nicely and Coach Axel loved it. This project was probably one of my favorite projects throughout my whole internship I was able to get creative and help make something happen. Once that was finished up I then had to text all the incoming freshman to remind them to fill out all the athletic forms so they would be eligible. It was important that they completed these as soon as possible too so they could participate in fall ball. Then I had to text all the upperclassmen regarding the “big brother program” to confirm if they had spoken with their little brother yet before school started. Since Coach Berkman wanted them to reach out to get to know one another. If they had talked them I was to check their name off on a list saying they had completed it. For my last task of the day I was helping Coach Berkman with adding new players to the active roster for the school athletics. Each freshman was given a number and we just had to type their number into the website and make sure they were active for season.
August 17, 2017 Thursday 8am-12:30pm It was my last day of my internship with Coach Berkman and the lacrosse team. It was actually kind of sad, because I really enjoyed working with them all. But anyway to start out the day I was able to sit in on their conference call with the Brine lacrosse representative’s for their gear order. It was very cool to see how all that work regarding all the gear and equipment they get. Salisbury is fully funded by Brine Lacrosse Company. They basically just talked about getting some mock ups or samples of gear for them to see and then they would place their order with Brine. Once the call was over Coach Berkman had me text all the freshman to find out where they were living, who they were living with, and when were they moving in. He had me write each player responses down for him to have for when they arrive in the next few weeks. After I had finished that Coach Berkman and I sat down to talk about my future and what I needed to do next. He suggested that I get on applying to graduate assistant or just assistant coaching positions very soon. He then went on to tell me that I did a great job and that I was a very big help to him and his staff this summer. He did give me one piece of advice that I will defiantly take moving forward, he said that I need to be more outgoing not so shy. He said especially when recruiting you need to really sell the school and the program. I really respect everything he had to say then and throughout my whole internship. I then thanked him again for giving me his time to help teach me what coaching is all about.
